As Charlotte grows (44 people move here each day), it's critical that we grow smarter. To help, Sustain Charlotte launched a new monthly event series called Grow Smart CLT! Join us for our June event, where our panelists will tackle the issue of smart growth and air quality!

TOPIC:
Smart Growth + Water

In a region growing as quickly as Charlotte-Mecklenburg, water may not be the issue at the top of people’s minds, but it is impacted every day. Rain washes pollutants into streams, stormwater erodes streambanks and floods neighborhoods built before anyone imagined such an urban city. Join us to hear our panel of experts discuss how our region’s rapid growth is affecting water quality, and what you can do to help.

PANELISTS:

Emilee Syrewicze — Executive Director, Catawba Riverkeeper

Emilee is a native of Northern Michigan and grew up with an ardent appreciation for clean water. She attended Alma College in Alma, Michigan and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in Chemistry. She then fostered her interest in environmental policy by attending Vermont Law School and graduating with her J.D. in 2011.

Rusty Rozzelle — Mecklenburg County Water Quality Program

Rusty Rozzelle manages Mecklenburg County’s Water Quality Program, which is a component of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services. The Program is charged with maintaining and restoring the quality and usability of the County’s surface water resources, including over 3,000 miles of streams in two (2) river basins and 190 miles of shoreline in three (3) of the 11 lakes that comprise the Catawba River System.
