(1982) Losing Ground, the feature length film directed by Kathleen Collins, is only the second feature length film to be directed by an African-American woman.

In the film, a professor of logic, Sara (played by Seret Scott), is married to a painter. Sara, regarded as beautiful but cold and clinical by everyone is married to a temperamental artist and has a free-spirited actress mother. Despite her professional success, she is not respected by her family – particularly her husband – who decides that they should take a country home for the summer so that he can work despite the fact that it will make it nearly impossible for Sara to access the library books she needs to complete her own work. Sara and her husband find themselves attracted to other people in this gripping drama.

About The Classic Black Cinema Series

A film series specifically designed as a vehicle to expose the community to the vast artistic value black film has had throughout the years. The goal is to appeal to as diverse a population as possible and further the appreciation of Black cinema.

Curator and host, Felix Curtis, came to Charlotte from the Oakland/San Francisco Bay area where he curated The San Francisco Black Film Festival and Black Filmworks, the annual film festival component of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, where he later served as Executive Director.
