A LITTLE ABOUT ROXY DALLAS:
Where you live: Brooklyn, New York City where they paint murals of Biggie
What team(s) you skate or ref for/with: I am proud to co-captain both the Gotham Girls Roller Derby All Stars and the Manhattan Mayhem (GGRD home team)
What position(s): Blocker
How long you have been skating?: 6 years
Do you remember your first time on skates? What was it like?: After talking derby with a now-retired Gotham skater during a marathon tattoo session, she sold me my beginner set up at Five Stride Skate Shop and then took me to skate around under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (GGRD's spiritual homeland.) I only fell on broken glass one or two times!
Do you coach any? What is your fav skill to teach?: I love coaching! I especially love hockey-style footwork and agility drills and fine-tuning foot and edge work to make jammers sad.
What has been your hardest work out/practice so far?: The last All Star practice before a WFTDA tournament is always pure brutality. The blood lust is so real and I think we go harder on each other than we do come game time, if you can believe it. Thankfully, you emerge from those practices grateful for your life, fearless, and ready to take on the world.
What is your fav Atom product and why?: I've always skated barefoot and basically hate having to wear socks or booties to keep my skates from beating up my feet. The fit and footbed of the Q4 was snug and comfy out of the oven and I could start skating with nudie feet almost immediately.
What makes skating/playing fun for you? I am my best self when I am on skates — any confidence I lack in sneakers is all there when I have wheels on my feet. I've never felt like I needed an alter ego in roller derby because I am never happier to be Roxy Dallas than when I'm skating.
What advice would you give a new skater/ref to our sports?: Never compare yourself to anyone. If someone learns something faster than you or nails something you're struggling with, watch them, talk to them, learn from them — but don't get down on yourself for not being them. You are you, you are rad, and you will get there.
Any superstitions you have to follow before a game/race?: It's not a superstition, per say, but I do like to warm up with one-footed slaloms — they're something that, when I first started skating, I never thought I'd really be able to do. It helps me remember that I have come a long way and that so many of the things we think are impossible are only a matter of time and determination.
DOORS WILL OPEN AT 8:00AM SHARP FOR REGISTRATION.
