More info on the win:
The Charlotte region’s cult-favorite, Fat Boy Baltic Porter, is now a world-wide favorite: With the Gold medal win at the European Beer Star 2017, Fat Boy, from The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB) in Charlotte, North Carolina, is one of the world’s best beers. Fat Boy joins OMB’s European Beer Star 2015 winner, Mecktoberfest, fall’s über-seasonal, with this win.
John Marrino, Founder of The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery: «To win a second international Gold medal in Germany is validation that our beers are world class, true-to-style and pure. We’re grateful to be recognized for our dedication to quality and traditional brewing methods. We’re an American brewery with German inspirations, so to compete in Germany and win Gold is the absolute highest honor we could achieve.»
Winning the Baltic Porter category, Fat Boy is OMB’s highest gravity brew, and is popular year-round. Fat Boy is rich and bold, but also nimbly covers a lot of tasty ground, blending sweet, malty notes of caramel, toffee, and chocolate with subtle hints of prunes and raisins. Like all OMB beers, it’s brewed in strict accordance with the world famous German Reinheitsgebot beer purity law, using only four all-natural ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast. At 8.3% ABV and 24 IBU, Fat Boy packs a subtle punch, while its strikingly beautiful, haunting deep purple hue (51.7 SRM) is one of a kind.
The European Beer Star competition is considered the “Champions League” of the international brewery world, and a medal from this prestigious competition is no small feat. 2,151 beers from 46 countries were submitted to this year’s European Beer Star, which were judged by a 133-member jury from 26 countries, including master brewers, beer sommeliers and recognized beer experts. Jurors participate in a two-day blind taste test measuring optical impression, foam/head, aroma, taste and brand-specific characteristics.
2,151 is the most beers ever entered in the competition, a 9% increase over the last time OMB won in 2015. «The new record participation in the European Beer Star proves the high regard that the prize enjoys in the international brewing world,” enthuses Oliver Dawid, CEO of Private Brauereien Bayern (Association of Private Bavarian Breweries).
OMB Brewers, Chase Petrovic and Brett Battista add, „It’s a great feeling to win Gold in an extra competitive year. Named after our original Brewer’s motorcycle, we’ve all had a hand in Fat Boy’s recipe and are proud to have another OMB beer receive international recognition at Euro Star.”
